What is the Best Potty for Potty Training?
By Jennifer L. Tuso
All of my reviews for the best potty for potty training are for potty seats. I did not find that starting with a potty chair was necessary for toilet training. I did find that a potty chair was more work because it has to be emptied and cleaned after every use. Also, if your child learns in a potty chair, then there will be an additional step to get to potty training completion because you will have to transition your child from the potty chair to a potty seat. So for me the best potty for potty training is a potty seat that fits onto the toilet.
The potty seats with splash guards are a necessity for boys. We like the soft potty seats with splash guards
and handles made by Learning Curve. These were large enough to fit a growing boy. When potty training boys early, it’s easier to teach them to sit on the potty first. After the age of two, teaching them to stand isn’t too difficult, as they instinctively want too. Teaching them to aim is the difficult part, so wait until they have more coordination for this. With this splash guard potty seat I do recommend rinsing the splash guard after each use or the urine will build up and stink. It just takes a second to rinse it under the tub’s water faucet and set it in the tub between uses.
Best Potty Seat for Girls
For girls we preferred the soft potty seats with handles and without the splash guard also made by Learning Curve. The other soft potty seats we tried were too small. Learning Curve potty seats are bigger and more comfortable. The handles help the kids feel secure and will get used. The newest model, has a princess theme with music which can help make potty training fun.
Best Potty Seat for Infants
For infants that can sit up but need support, I recommend the Prince Lionheart weePOD Toilet Trainer. This potty seat has higher sides
and a higher back for extra support. It fits snuggly into any toilet with prongs that adjust. It does have a splash guard that will work for infant boys. However, as your boy grows you may want to switch to the Learning Curve seat, as the splash guard on that seat provides more coverage.
Best Travel Potty Seat
We used two different travel potty seats throughout our potty training adventures. I liked both of them for different reasons.
The Mommy’s Helper Cushie Traveler was great for our girl. Its best feature was how small it folds up. It folds up to fit into a small bag that it comes with and was able to support our girl until she was a little over two when we stopped using potty seats. It may not be strong enough for kids over two, especially boys.
For our boy we used the Kalencom 2-in1 Potette Plus. This travel potty can fit on a toilet or fold
into a travel potty chair for those moments when your child has to go NOW! and can’t wait until you get to a bathroom. Is does have a slightly raised part in front that is supposed to be a splash guard. If you position your boy properly, then the splash guard does its job. However, it’s not the best of splash guards and I would recommend bringing a change of clothes wherever you go. Unfortunately there are not any travel potty seats with a good splash guard for boys that I have found, making this your best option for a travel potty seat for boys.
